Nestled in the charming township of Ōkato, New Zealand, at 2502 South Road, this restaurant is more than just a meal; it’s an experience that promises to leave a lasting impression.
Customer reviews highlight the caring hospitality of hosts Hamish and Ziggy, who go above and beyond to cater to the needs of their guests. Whether you’re on a work trip like Sonny B, who raved about the hearty, home-cooked meals enriched by "nan's secret sauce," or celebrating a special occasion as Chris Kissick did on Father's Day with a delectable two-course menu, you're sure to feel at home. The warmth and dedication of the staff are evident in every dish served, proving that The Okato is designed not just for eating but for nurturing heartfelt connections.
Then there's the stunning backdrop of Mt. Taranaki; waking up to this majestic view elevates the dining experience even further. Just a stone's throw away from beautiful beaches and renowned surf spots along the Surf Highway, The Okato isn’t just about food; it’s about being part of the vibrant local culture.
The menu offers a delightful assortment of dishes that reflect both creativity and tradition. Bohdan Juříček couldn't help but praise one of the best steak pies he encountered during his travels across New Zealand, paired with an excellent cup of coffee. For those seeking a weekend retreat, the restaurant also welcomes van travelers, making it convenient to stop by for a meal after enjoying the nearby surf.
Foodies will appreciate the attention to detail, as Alana Bridger discovered when she was tempted away from her original plan of coffee to try the winning gnocchi and beautifully presented mussel dish. Her experience exemplifies how The Okato transcends ordinary dining to create a memorable culinary journey.
With a blend of rich flavors and friendly service, and a setting that invites reflection and relaxation, The Okato is a must-visit destination for locals and visitors alike. Just finished a 8day stay away work trip with my crew of 4 working 12hr days to get the job done Hamish and Ziggy were amazing hosts to say the least going that extra mile working around our busy schedule making sure we were fed proper good hearty home cooked restaurant style meals nans secret sauce to top it off 10/10. Food hospitality location waking up to Mt Taranaki every morning close to the beach just made our job that much harder because we did not want to leave highly recommend staying if not stopping in for a meal.

Went for Father's Day lunch. It was a set 2 course menu. I had the roast pork belly and partner had the roast chicken followed by sticky date pudding. We couldn't fault both the mains. Nice & friendly staff. Would go again.

Had one of the best steak pies I’ve tried while travelling around New Zealand! Great coffee as well. The place is just minutes away from some great surf spots on the Surf Highway and the owners are super friendly and welcoming! They also offered we can easily park the van in the backyard when we come for a drink or meal over the weekend, so we’ll be back for sure!

We stayed in room 3 last night while passing through. Good location as you have the cafe/restaurant /bar/hotel all in one spot. Loved the room. Clean as. Food and service were good. Hamish and Zara were very welcoming. It was great chatting with Hamish about the history and their future plans. We wish you all the best.

Beautiful food, Beautiful Staff, Great selection of drinks, the cocktails are so good! If you haven't been here yet, put it on your list of "places to eat" it's a must do while in Taranaki! Location wise, be very careful of traffic as it is on a main road intersection (100km/h area)
